French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Baghdad, Looking to Rebuild Ties

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is in Baghdad, marking his first visit to Iraq since he took the presidency and the first for a French head of state since Saddam Hussein was ousted in 2003.

France had adamantly opposed the U.S. led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and that drove a wedge between them and the Americans. Several U.S. companies and consumers boycotted French products but the fervor eventually died down.

Now Sarkozy is looking to rebuild the ties that were broken in Iraq, he has already met with Prime Minister Nouri Maliki and President Jalal Talabani and promised to play an active role in reviving the Iraqi economy.

Sarkozy is also expected to seek jobs for French companies inside Iraq when contracts for reconstruction projects are created.

The French President will be traveling to Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman after leaving Iraq.
