U.S. Senate Passes Economic Stimulus Plan

The Democratic-controlled U.S. Senate managed to pass the controversial economic stimulus package pushed by President Barack Obama after securing a 61-37 vote to approve the plan.

While the Senate approved the $838 billion stimulus package there will be plenty of work that needs to be done before it hits Obama’s desk. The Senate version of the bill will have to be worked out with the version passed by the House of Representatives.

Obama has been pushing for a quick resolution to the bill, saying the stimulus package was what the country needed to create more jobs and get the economy back on track. Republicans have criticized the bill, saying it was more about spending money than stimulating the economy.

Many have also been upset with the number of earmarks that appear within the bill, something Obama had promised to leave out.
