Morgan Tsvangirai Names Tendai Biti as Choice for Finance Minister in Unity Government

Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai has named MDC secretary general Tendai Biti as his selection for finance minister in Zimbabwe’s new unity government.

Biti had been facing treason charges after he was accused of plotting to overthrow President Robert Mugabe but a Zimbabwe judge dropped the charges last week, declaring the prosecution had done nothing to prove its case.

Perhaps no cabinet position in Zimbabwe’s unity government will attract more attention than the finance minister post as the country tries to dig itself out of an economic collapse. Staggering inflation has left the currency of Zimbabwe in ruins and the government recently agreed to allow foreign currency to be used as legal tender.

Biti will have to focus on programs that will stabilize the economy as well as attract foreign investment in Zimbabwe.

Cabinet members of the new coalition government will be sworn in on Friday while Tsvangirai will be sworn in as prime minister on Wednesday.
