Michael
Phelps no longer appears to be feeling like a fish out of water as the superstar
swimmer who captured a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympic
Games has said he is moving past the recent controversy surrounding a photo capturing
him smoking marijuana at a party.
Phelps,
23, had his life turned upside down about two weeks ago when the photo of him
at a party in South Carolina surfaced. He quickly acknowledged that the photo
was real and he went into an apologetic mode that placed him in front of
television cameras on a daily basis.
Worn
down by the press, Phelps expressed the possibility that he may retire from
swimming but he has since backed off that stance. Speaking to the Baltimore Sun
the swimmer stated, “I'm already happier now than I was, just having some part
of my life back to normal.”
He
continued, “Just swimming and thinking about everything going on. Everything is
back to what I call normal. It will take a few months. I'll give it 30 or 60
days. I think it will be better.”
Following
his admission Phelps was suspended by the U.S. swimming federation for three
months and his endorsement deal with Kellogg was dropped.
