Opposition
leader Morgan Tsvangirai has been sworn in as Zimbabwe’s prime minister,
cementing the unity government and ending months of struggles to resolve a
power-sharing agreement between the MDC leader and President Robert Mugabe.
Mugabe
administered the oath to his once bitter rival during a ceremony at the presidential
palace in Harare. During the oath Tsvangirai pledged to “truly serve Zimbabwe
in the office of prime minister of the republic of Zimbabwe.”
While
the historic moment signaled a new day for Zimbabwe the country is still facing
staggering inflation, an economy in ruins, a cholera outbreak that has killed
more than 3,400 people and a crumbling health and sanitation sector that has
left the country in a mess.
Tsvangirai
had actually won the first-round of the presidential election in early 2008 but
it was determined that he did not secure a large enough majority to avoid a
run-off. During the second round Tsvangirai dropped out of the race after
declaring Mugabe had been using violence and intimidation to prevent MDC
supporters from voting.
Over
the next several months the two sides battled to resolve their differences and
although they signed a power-sharing agreement in September it would be another
four months before that agreement actually saw any progress.
Mugabe
clearly wanted to maintain full control over Zimbabwe but constant pressure from
the Southern African Development Community and trade embargos from other
countries left him little choice but to comply.
The
rest of the new cabinet forming the unity government will be sworn in on
Friday.
