New
York Jets quarterback Brett Favre will not be back in 2009, telling the team
that he will retire for the second time in less than a year.
Favre
had his agent, James “Bus” Cook, inform the Jets of his retirement and on
Wednesday the team acknowledged they had received the notification.
The
39-year-old Favre played just one season for the Jets after playing 16 seasons
with the Green Bay Packers and a rookie year that had him playing in an Atlanta
Falcons jersey. After announcing his retirement 11 months ago Favre opted to
play one more year and after a deal with the Packers couldn’t be worked out he
signed with the Jets.
It
appeared as it would be a storybook season for Favre as the Jets jumped to a
9-3 record but they dropped their final four games and failed to make the
playoffs. He was then criticized by several players for underperforming late in
the season but Favre shrugged those comments off, attributing them to
frustration and admitting that he had run out of steam.
Over
his 18-year career Favre was a ten-time Pro Bowl selection, named the NFL MVP
three times and led the Packers a Super Bowl title. He finishes his career with
the most passing touchdowns at 464, most passing yards at 65,127, most
completions at 5,720. Favre also strung together the most consecutive games
started by a quarterback at 269 games, 291 games when including playoffs.
