Senator John McCain blames immigrants for Arizona wildfires

By: Daun Lee

Senator John McCain claimed that illegal immigrants caused the fires that have destroyed parts of Arizona.

In a press conference held on Saturday after touring the Wallow fire area, Senator McCain said there was substantial evidence that proves undocumented immigrants caused the blazes .Over 500,000 acres have been burned in the state.  He claims that they must set fires to keep warm, signal each other and divert law enforcement. McCain further stated “The answer to that part of the problem is to get a secure border.”

He, however, did not provide evidence. A spokesman for McCain, Brooke Buchannan spoke to a reporter for Salon, stating that McCain wasn’t referring to the Wallow fire, but smaller fires near the border.

Tom Berglund or the U.S. forestry service says there is no evidence that proves immigrants are to blame for the fires. The fires were started by a human fire, which escaped a camp but the exact culprit hasn’t been determined.

Latino activists are outraged that McCain would blame undocumented immigrants for the fires.

Close to 10 million undocumented immigrants reside in the U.S., and each could face deportation if identified. These immigrants can contact an immigration attorney to help them obtain visas or citizenship.

Although the U.S. has a cap on the number of people they allowed naturalization each year, it still has one of the most liberal immigration policies of most western nations. An immigration lawyer can offer valuable assistance to the immigrant who desires citizenship. With extensive knowledge of the law, immigration attorneys have the necessary qualifications to aid a person in the process of naturalization.
