The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed a strong earthquake struck northern Chile on Monday. The epicenter of the 6.3 magnitude temblor was located about 55 miles northeast of Calama and about 178 miles northeast of Antofagasta. It struck at a depth of 69.2 miles. The cities of Iquique, Alto Hospicio and Pica reported feeling the earthquake.
Chilean officials said they did not receive any reports of damages, injuries or deaths. Copper mines in areas around the epicenter were able to continue operating as usual. No other details were immediately available.
