Two men convicted of murder for their participation in a violent attack on a bank in Afghanistan in February were executed Monday inside a Kabul prison. The National Intelligence Police released a statement saying Zar Ajam, a Pakistan native, and Matiullah, from Afghanistan’s Kunar province, were executed at 11:00 a.m. Although numerous reports say the men were executed by hanging, the National Intelligence Police did not specify a method of execution.
Ajam, Matiullah and three other attackers entered a branch of the Kabul Bank in Jalalabad and opened fire. The attack targeted security officials picking up their paychecks. At least 40 people were killed and 78 others injured. One of the attackers died after denoting a suicide vest while a second was shot and killed by security forces. The third was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
