The Florida Division of Forestry has confirmed two forest rangers died in the Blue Ribbon wildfire on Monday. Josh Burch, 31, and Brett Fulton, 52, were cutting a “fire line” near Jasper when the fire shifted and trapped them. Two other rangers identified as Robert Marvin and Stephen Carpenter sustained injuries while trying to save Burch and Fulton. Marvin and Carpenter received treatment at nearby hospitals.
"My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of the two courageous men who sacrificed their lives for the safety of others. We can rebuild the structures and restore the land, but the lives of these two heroes can never be replaced,” Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam said in a statement.
The Blue Ribbon fire started last Thursday and was quickly contained, but it flared up again Monday due to dry conditions.
