A young Pakistani girl was returned safe to her parents Tuesday after being kidnapped by insurgents who attempted to use her as a suicide bomber.
Police say two armed men and two women abducted 9-year-old Suhana Jawed Sunday in Peshawar. Suhana was walking to school when the women forced her into a car and drugged her. The child was then taken to a house and fitted with a vest packed with 20 pounds of explosives. The insurgents drove Suhana to the Darra Islam military checkpoint about 6 miles outside of Timergarah and told her to detonate the vest.
"Instead of detonating the jacket, after getting out of the car, the child started shouting and running towards the paramilitary frontier corps soldiers stationed at the... post," Lower Dir district police officer Saleem Marwat tells CNN.
Soldiers removed the vest from Suhana and took her into custody. The insurgents escaped.
