Fake fat linked to weight gain

By: Daun Lee

Obesity is a serious issue in today’s society. Many producers of high fat foods like potato chips have been adding fake fats to their products to satisfy consumers with a tasty snack that is low in fat. However, a recent study has found that these fake fats actually cause people to gain weight.

A study conducted by Purdue University found that fat substitutes intended to help people lose weight caused laboratory rats to gain weight.  In statement lead researcher Dr. Susan E. Swithers said “Our research showed that fat substitutes can interfere with the body’s ability to regulate food intake, which can lead to inefficient use of calories and weight gain.”

Researchers believe the regulating energy is a learned process so the body prepares itself to digest foods that are high in calories, but eating fat substitutes interferes with that relationship.

Losing weight is a challenge for both the obese and the slightly overweight. Researchers suggest that people who want to lose weight should follow low-calorie and low-fat diets instead of eating foods with fat substitutes.

Even those who have lost weight may find they are not completely satisfied with their bodies, for these individuals liposuction gives them the opportunity to target areas of the body resistant to exercise. A perfect candidate for liposuction is a person who has reached a sensible weight. Liposuction has a relatively short recovery time and is minimally invasive and is an inexpensive way to achieve a trimmer figure.
