Pakistan Admits Link to Deadly Mumbai Attacks

At least part of the plans for the deadly Mumbai attacks carried out in November were crafted in Pakistan according to a senior Pakistani official. The admission is the first time Pakistan has publicly acknowledged the link and could help ease the tenuous relationship between India and their neighbor.

Following the attacks that left 173 dead and several more injured Pakistan immediately denied any connection to the events yet it was soon determined that the sole attacker to survive was from Pakistan.

A connection was quickly established between the attackers and Lashkar-e-Taiba, a banned militant group in Pakistan, and a number of their members have been taken into custody in connection to the attacks.

Three months after holding firm to their assertion that they had no direct link to the Mumbai attacks Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik told reporters on Thursday, “Some part of the conspiracy has taken place in Pakistan. We have lodged an FIR [first information report] into the case.”

Malik went on to say, “The attackers left from Karachi on a boat hired from Balochistan. An e-mail claiming responsibility for the attack was sent by Zarrar Shah of the Lashkar-e-Taiba.”

The admission was followed by a statement from India which noted, “We would expect that the government of Pakistan take credible steps to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism in Pakistan.”
