Two killed in South Carolina train collision

By: Daun Lee

Two people were killed Monday in a collision involving a passenger truck and an Amtrak passenger train.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol the accident occurred around 7:45 Monday morning in Cheraw, South Carolina. The occupants of the pick-truck, Barney Diggers, 57 and Glen Locklear, 56 both died of their injuries. The truck was crossing the track when it was struck by the passenger train. The tracks did not have cross arms or a signal, but did have a stop sign. The two men frequented this train crossing on their way to their job at the Public works building nearby so the accident is baffling for their co-workers.

Investigators said it could take weeks to determine the cause of the accident. None of the 224 passengers on the train were injured, but were delayed on the tracks for six hours.

Accidents are generally caused by the negligence of a driver, in this particular case it is unclear at this time who or what caused the collision. A person injured by another’s negligence can hire an accident attorney to receive a monetary settlement for their suffering and medical care.

The magnitude of an accident between a train and a passenger vehicle can result in death or permanent disability. The families of those who are mortally injured will have expenses that an accident lawyer can recover for them.  If the primary breadwinner becomes disabled or dies an accident attorney can obtain the financial support they need to carry on with their lives.
