Members
of Kenya’s parliament have voted against a special tribunal that would try
individuals accused of instigating and perpetuating the 2008 post-election
violence that left more than 1,500 dead and scores more fleeing their homes.
MPs
voting against the tribunal expressed a lack of faith in the justice system in
Kenya and said they would rather turn the suspects over to The Hague to be
tried in the International Criminal Court.
The
vote went against the backing of President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila
Odinga who had been in favor of the tribunal. Despite the backing of Kibaki and
Odinga only 101 MPs supported the tribunal, well short of the 145 needed to
move forward.
A
list of suspects in the post-election violence will now likely be turned over
to former UN chief Kofi Annan who had chaired mediation talks prior to the vote.
Annan would then forward the list to the ICC.
