Dutch MP Banned from UK Turned Away after Arriving at Heathrow

A Dutch MP who attempted to defy a ban on entering the UK has been turned away by immigration officials shortly after arriving at London’s Heathrow airport.

Geert Wilders has been heavily criticized for calling the Koran a “fascist book” in his most recent film, Fitna. Already facing a trial in the Netherlands for inciting hatred Wilders earned a ban in the UK after the home secretary equated Wilders’ comments to spreading hatred.

Despite the UK ban Wilders was invited to the House of Lords by the Independence Party’s Lord Pearson to show the controversial film. Pearson defended Wilders’ freedom of speech and said the film “isn’t offensive unless you are a violent Islamist.”

Wilders accepted the invited and then criticized the ban saying, “It's incredible that an elected politician who was invited by one of your parliamentarians to a discussion with people who are against me, or in favour of me (isn’t allowed into the UK).”

While Wilders still faces trial in the Netherlands the government opposes the UK ban and the Dutch Ambassador was at the airport when Wilders arrived to support the MP.

That support didn’t carry much weight as Foreign Secretary David Miliband stated “We have profound commitment to freedom of speech but there is no freedom to cry 'fire' in a crowded theatre and there is no freedom to stir up hate, religious and racial hatred, according to the laws of the land.”
