The
official results of Israel’s general election have provided little in the way
of a new government as the country’s two main parties failed to capture the
necessary seats needed to form a government.
Election
results showed that Kadima still held their 28 seats while their closest rival
Likud maintained their 27 seats, both parties fell short of the 61 they would
need to organize their own government. Tzipi Livni of Kadima and Benjamin
Netanyahu of Likud will now try to find coalition partners that will shape the new
government.
It
will be up to President Shimon Peres to select which leader will attempt to
form the new coalition government and both leaders have begun to state their
case. Livni appears to have her work cut out for her as she would need to gather
support from several smaller parties and many of them are against her proposed
peace plans with Palestinians.
Netanyahu
seems to think he would have an easier time forming a coalition government as
he has said the majority of Israelis favor a right-wing government and more
than half the seats in the Knesset are currently held by nationalist parties.
Official
results of the general election will be announced next Wednesday at which time
Peres will ask one of the leaders to form the new body. Whoever is selected
will then have up to 42 days to form a coalition but if that fails Peres can
then ask another leader to try.
