Valentine's Gift Ideas from Relationship Expert Gloria MacDonald

Wondering what to get your partner this Valentine's Day? A perfect idea may be easier to find than you think! Gloria MacDonald, matchmaker, author, relationship expert, and founder of Perfect Partners: The Personal Relationship Executive Search Firm explains that knowing your partner's love language is the first step to finding the perfect gift.

The challenge every Valentine's Day is to find a special and unique gift that reflects your undying love for your significant other. There is often a lot of pressure to find the perfect thing! When people ask Gloria about gift ideas her advice is "It is really important for you to understand your partner's love language. Dr. Gary Chapman's fantastic book 'The Five Love Languages' provides amazing insight into how people express and receive love. If you understand that, then the perfect gift idea is a lot easier to find."

To some people getting a physical gift is really, really important. For them the gift is a symbol of your love. It's not about giving them the gift that you want to give them, but giving them the gift that they would want to receive. So think about what your partner loves and loves to do and get them a gift that shows that you are listening.

For many other people, receiving an actual physical gift is not the best idea. If your partner's love language is words of affirmation then hearing how you feel and how much you appreciate them is really important. MacDonald says "Find a way to write them a very special note that tells them why they are important to you, what you love about them and why they are so special. You could write them a poem or find a song that you think is particularly appropriate. The main thing is the words that they need to hear or see written from you."

For others, quality time spent together is the ideal expression of your love. To surprise these people you could create a book of gift certificates containing things you know they love to do…and do them together! They don't have to be physical activities or expensive events. Spending time where you are one-on-one, listening to one another, talking to one another, being quiet together is much more valuable.

Physical touch is another of the love languages. If your partner is very cuddly, touchy feely and you are not as much so, this would be a perfect time for you to step out of your comfort zone to spend time with your partner, giving them a massage, being intimate and physically showing them that you love them.

The last love language is acts of service. If that is their love language you may want to consider what you can do to help them out. Tell them that you'll take their clothes to the dry-cleaners for the next five or six weeks or find something that they need repaired and surprise them by doing it. MacDonald says "It doesn't have to be extravagant just something that helps them out… gift certificates for making dinner, washing dishes, folding laundry...something that shows that you've been listening to what they need."

This Valentine's Day try something different. Express your love with a really special, unique gift that shows you've taken the time to know and understand your partner.
