Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig Said to be Considering Reinstating Hank Aaron as Home Run King

MLB commissioner Bud Selig is said to be considering the idea of reinstating baseball legend Hank Aaron as the all-time home run king, supplanting Barry Bonds atop the list as a means of restoring integrity back into the record books.

Selig has been forced to look at Major League records as more and more evidence surfaces concerning the use of performance-enhancing drugs over the past two decades. Many suspect Bonds of using steroids during his career and his passing of Aaron on the all-time list led many to call for an asterisk by the record.

Aaron surpassed the 714 homeruns hit by Babe Ruth on April 8, 1974 when he hit an Al Downing offering over the left field wall at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. He would add another 40 homeruns to retire with 755, a record many thought insurmountable.

That all changed in the middle of the 1990s as more players began showing unprecedented power numbers and that trend carried into the 2000s and in 2007 Bonds eclipsed Aaron’s record and now sits at 762 career homeruns. Bonds is widely suspected of taking performance-enhancing drugs and has been said to have tested positive for steroids.

Selig has faced added pressure to revise the record book now that Alex Rodriguez admitted to taking banned substances earlier in his career. Many felt that Rodriguez would eventually pass Bonds on the homerun list, he now sits 12^th on the all-time list with 553, and restore legitimacy to one of the most treasured records in sports. Now that he has admitted guilt baseball fans have once again called for Aaron’s name to top that list

The commissioner has expressed some concern about making that decision, telling USA Today “once you start tinkering, you can create more problems,” but he remained opened to the idea.
