Media Day Set For National Putting Championship

The U.S. Putting Tour announced that August 30 has been set as media day for the USPT Championship, which will take place September 26 through October 2 at The Crossing at Carlsbad in Carlsbad, California.

The highlight of the putting championship's media day will be a putting competition among media and dignitaries in attendance at The Crossings. In fact, the winner of the putting event will receive an exemption into the 2011 USPT Championship.

"There's no better way to introduce the media to the USPT Championship than by having them try out the putting course in a friendly competition," said Jim Hartley, president of the U.S. Putting Tour. "It should be a fun event and a great opportunity for the media throughout Southern California to learn more about the U.S. Putting Tour."

Members of the media are invited to come to The Crossings prior to 11:00 a.m. and head directly to the primary putting green, where the putting competition will begin precisely at 11:00. The entire event will take less than an hour. Snacks and beverages will be served.

Executives of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, the official charity of the putting championship, will be in attendance, as will representatives from the city of Carlsbad, The Crossings, the San Diego Sports Commission and Visit Carlsbad.

The USPT Championship features seven days of competition for professional and amateur golfers. The tournament offers golfers multiple days from which to choose to play their first round. A to-be-determined number of golfers will advance from each Round 1 day to Round 2 on October 2. The top 24 golfers will advance to Round 3 on the afternoon of October 2.

The overall winner earns the title of America's Best Putter and the USPT Championship trophy. Golfers who choose to compete as professionals will battle for the $10,000 first prize. Amateur golfers will compete for merchandise prizes in accordance with the USGA's rules on Amateur Golf.
