A Continental Airlines plane crashed in to a Buffalo, New
York home late Thursday night killing all 49 on board and a man inside the
home.
Connection Flight 3407, a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 made by Canadian-based
Bombardier Inc, was en route from Newark, New Jersey to Buffalo when it crashed
and burst into flames around 10:20 p.m.
A spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration
Laura Brown said the pilot sent no distress call before the plane, operated by
Colgan Air, went down. “It just dropped off the radar,” she said.
A dozen houses were evacuated around the crash site. One
man inside the home was killed. A woman and her daughter escaped with minor
injuries.
The cause of the crash is being investigated. A joint investigation
is being conducted by the State police, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and the
Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority.
Authorities believe ice may have formed on the aircraft’s
wings and played a part in the crash. Ice can disrupt the air flow over an
airplane’s wings.
