Beverly
Eckert, the widow of a Sept. 11 victim, was among the 50 people killed on
Thursday night when Continental Connection Flight 3407 crashed in a suburb of
Buffalo, just minutes from the airport.
Eckert
had been traveling to Buffalo to celebrate what would have been the 58th
birthday for her husband, Sean Rooney. Rooney had been at the World Trade Center
when they were attacked on 9/11. Shortly after the attacks Eckert took an
active role in establishing memorials and working with other families of victims.
In
addition to marking her husband’s 58th birthday Eckert had been
traveling to Buffalo to work on a scholarship program that had been established
in the city for her husband.
All
44 passengers and four crew members were killed on the twin-prop Bombardier
Dash 8 Q400 aircraft when it slammed into a home in the suburb of Clarence
Center. A man inside the home was also killed while two others managed to
escape.
There
had been rain mixed with snow when Flight 3407 began experiencing trouble.
There was no contact with airport officials prior to the crash. An
investigation has begun into what may have caused the plane to go down.
