After 16 years on the run, former Boston mob boss and FBI informant James Bulger, also known as Whitey, has been captured. Bulger and his longtime girlfriend Catherine Elizabeth Grieg were taken into custody by the FBI on Wednesday at an apartment in Santa Monica, California.
Bulger, 81, was put on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list in August 1999, four years after he disappeared. A $2 million reward was being offered for information leading to his arrest. He was wanted for 19 murders, extortion, money laundering, racketeering, conspiracy and distribution of illegal narcotics. Bulger inspired a character in the 2006 Oscar-winning film “The Departed” starring Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen.
Bulger’s arrest came just one day after the FBI began airing 30-second TV spots featuring information on 60-year-old Grieg, who will be charged with harboring a fugitive. A tip led to the couple’s arrests.
