Roy
Bennett, a senior official in the opposition Movement for Democratic Change and
the party’s nominee for the position of deputy agriculture minister in Zimbabwe’s
unity government, was arrested at a Harare airport.
The
arrest came just before a new power-sharing cabinet crafted by the MDC and
ZANU-PF was sworn in. at State House. Bennett, a former land owner who lost his
property when President Robert Mugabe implemented his land reform programs, has
been arrested several times and was the subject of an arrest warrant alleging he
was involved in a plot against the ZANU-PF leader.
Bennett
had recently returned to Zimbabwe after spending nearly two years in exile in
South Africa. He had been tapped by the MDC to fill the position of deputy
agriculture minister, a position that he was to assume next week.
On
Friday the senior ministers in the coalition government were sworn in to the Cabinet
but that was no easy task either. For more than two hours there was strong
debate over the allocation of posts. According to the power-sharing deal Mugabe’s
ZANU-PF could appoint 15 ministers while the two factions of the MDC have 16
posts.
Just
prior to the swearing in ceremony MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai didn’t downplay the
serious conditions facing Zimbabwe. He noted the humanitarian crisis facing the
country as it struggles to control a cholera outbreak that has killed more than
3,400 people, a health sector that is crumbling and a financial system that is
in ruins.
