Somalia’s
President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has named Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke as
the country’s new prime minister. The announcement is seen as a positive move
in establishing strong relationships in the international community as
Sharmarke has been recognized for his diplomacy.
In
his acceptance speech Sharmarke stated, “I will continue to promote
reconciliation and create a sense of unity among Somalis.” That promotion of
unity appears to be a real possibility with Sharmarke as he is widely respected
throughout his country and is seen as a man who will represent all Somalis
equally.
Sharmarke
now has a month to appoint a new cabinet that will be approved by parliament.
He will also have to resolve the continued problems the country has faced with the
radical Islamist group al-Shabab which has refused to recognize the new administration.
Somalia
has gone nearly two decades without a centralized government and much of the country
is run by Islamist radicals.
