Two American hikers arrested in Iran in 2009 and charged with espionage will go on trial July 31. Shane Bauer, 28, and Josh Fattal, 29, were supposed to appear in court for a trial hearing on May 11, but the hearing was canceled for unknown reasons.
Bauer and Fattal’s attorney, Masoud Shafii, said an Iranian court notified him of the new trial date this week. "Since the trial date coincides with the second anniversary of their arrest and continuous detention, I hope that this session will put an end to their case," he said.
Fattal, Bauer and their friend Sarah Shourd were accused of espionage after they allegedly crossed illegally into Iran while hiking in Iraq’s Kurdish region in July 2009. Shourd was released from custody last September after she posted $500,000 bail. Fattal and Bauer pleaded not guilty at a hearing in February.
