Three Explosions in Baghdad Market Leave 23 Dead

Nearly two dozen people were killed Thursday in three separate explosions in Baghdad. An interior ministry official said the bombs were packed in wooden carts and detonated in the Shurt al Raba market area of the city. One of the bombs reportedly exploded near Husseiniya, a religious site for Shia Muslims. An official reported at least 23 people died and 86 others were wounded.

Also in Baghdad on Thursday, a US contractor was killed in an explosion as he left al-Mustansariyah University. The U.S. Embassy confirmed the contractor’s death and said at least one American citizen was wounded. "An American civilian working with an implementing partner of the United States Agency for International Development in Iraq was killed in a terrorist attack today in Baghdad. Two additional civilians were wounded in the attack, including one American citizen,” an Embassy spokesman said.
