Pennsylvania reports bath salt use contributing to more DUI arrests

DUI arrests increase due to synthetic drugs

The newest designer drugs, termed ‘bath salts’, which have recently emerged, are causing a variety of problems in various states.

Pennsylvania, a state that has yet to ban the sale and use of bath salts, is reporting an 8 percent jump in DUI related arrests in the past two years alone. George Geisler, Drug Recognition Expert at the PA DUI Association, believes that the increased arrests are directly related to the popularity of synthetic drugs such as bath salts.

“Synthetic drugs, particularly bath salts, are wreaking havoc on the nation,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Unfortunately, bath salts are substances that many states have not yet regulated. Hopefully, lawmakers will soon see the need to pass swift legislation outlawing these types of synthetic drugs.”

New Jersey, Louisiana and Florida have banned bath salts, and over one dozen other states have banned synthetic marijuana. The Pennsylvania House and Senate recently passed a law banning synthetic drugs, and it is currently awaiting the governor’s signature.
