New York study shows alcohol most used drug among teens

Teenagers report alcohol use

The Council on Addiction Prevention and Education of Dutchess County, NY recently released a report on a study entitled “Profiles of Student Life: Attitudes and Behaviors” which focused not only on drug use among teens, but also attitudes towards drug use.

Teens from eighth to twelfth grade were surveyed anonymously, and it was found that that alcohol was being consumed more so than any other drug. In addition, many of those who were surveyed indicated that they saw no real harm in consuming alcohol.

“This is a disturbing finding,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “While it is concerning in itself that teens are consuming alcohol, what may be of even more concern is their apathetic attitude about doing so. When teens have no real emotion or see no real problem with a behavior, they tend to engage in that behavior even more frequently. Not only is underage drinking a crime, but the danger it poses emotionally, mentally, psychologically and academically is also of great concern. We must put greater emphasis on the dangers of underage drinking and, as parents, we must model proper behavior as it relates to our personal alcohol consumption.”
