Israel has said that they would not agree to a truce in Gaza until an Israeli soldier kidnapped in 2006 was freed by Palestinian militants.
In an attempt to halt rocket attacks launched by Hamas militants Israel waged a three-week campaign in Gaza that included airstrikes and ground attacks. More than 1,300 were killed and at least 50,000 were left homeless in the strikes as Israel targeted Hamas locations and tunnels used to smuggle in weapons from Egypt.
After the campaign Israel announced a ceasefire based on the condition that the rocket attacks would stop and the smuggling would end but since that ceasefire both sides have exchanged fire and now Israeli officials are demanding the release of soldier Gilad Shalit as a condition to a lasting truce.
According to a statement released by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s office, “The position of the prime minister is that Israel won't reach any arrangement on a truce before the release of Gilad Shalit.”
Hamas, which controls Gaza, has demanded Israel lift its blockade on the region before a lasting truce can be reached. That blockade has existed since mid-2007 when Hamas took control of the territory.
