Kurdish Demonstrators Clash with Turkish Police for Second Straight Day

For the second consecutive day Kurdish demonstrators protesting the arrest and imprisonment of leader Abdullah Ocalan have clashed with Turkish police.

Ocalan was arrested ten years ago and is serving a life sentence for treason. The leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) is the only prisoner being held on an island prison.

On Saturday Kurdish demonstrators hurled stones at riot police while they were met with water cannons and tear gas. The clashes continued on Sunday and a number from both sides have been injured.

Violence has been reported in southeast Turkey as well as Istanbul.

The PKK, fighting to establish an independent Kurdish state inside Turkey, has been recognized as a terrorist organization by not only Turkey but the EU and the United States as well.
