Zimbabwe Drops Treason Charges Against MDC Treasurer Roy Bennett, to Issue New Charges

Treason charges against Movement for Democratic Change member Roy Bennett have been dropped by Zimbabwe but the deputy ministerial nominee is now facing new charges that involve conspiracy with intent to disrupt the government.

Bennett was arrested on Friday at an airport in Harare just hours before President Robert Mugabe swore in new ministers of the unity government. The MDC leadership has already alleged that the charges against Bennett were leveled to undermine the tenuous power-sharing agreement forged by Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai.

Tsvangirai was sworn in as Zimbabwe’s prime minister last Wednesday as part of that deal but he has remained skeptical of Mugabe and his commitment to the unity government.

Bennett has served as treasurer for the MDC and has been selected as the deputy agriculture minister in the new government but he remains behind bars and is expected to appear in court on Monday. Several MDC supporters have camped outside the police station where Bennett is being held. He is expected to appear in court on Monday here new charges will be leveled against him.
