NBA commissioner David Stern has announced that one of the game’s greatest players will now have his name on an award he never won. On Saturday Stern revealed that the NBA Finals MVP would bear the name of Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell.
The 2009 NBA Finals MVP, and all others following, will receive the Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award.
Russell led the Celtics to 11 NBA championships as a player and coach and was named NBA MVP on five occasions but he was never honored with a Finals MVP, an award that was first handed out in 1969 and won by Jerry West.
