Continental Flight that Crashed in Buffalo Reportedly on Autopilot at Time of Accident

The Continental Connection Flight 3407 crash that killed all 49 people on board and a man inside his Buffalo home was reportedly on autopilot, a violation of airline policy in icy conditions.

It is believed an ice buildup caused the Continental flight to fall from the sky about five miles from the Buffalo airport and slam into a home in the suburb of Clarence Center on Thursday night.

Officials had been trying to make contact with the twin-prop Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft after it disappeared from the radar. Witnesses in the area said they saw the plane drop from the sky and burst into flames after making impact with the house.

According to investigators who have gathered information from the scene those accounts appeared to be true. Flight data collected showed that the pilot had received warning from the safety system that the plane was losing lift.

Investigators are also trying to understand why the plane was pointing away from the Buffalo airport it had been cleared to land at. In icy conditions the practice of turning the plane 180 degrees can be implemented as an attempt to shake the buildup.
