The Dayton 500 start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on Sunday but that could be pushed back as forecasters have predicted rain would likely fall throughout the afternoon and into the evening.
According to reports the Daytona International Speedway needs about two hours to completely dry and with rain still falling the likelihood of a green flag being waved to start the season-opening race anytime soon is doubtful.
Despite the ominous outlook NASCAR officials remain confident that the sports premier event would be completed on Sunday, even if it was under lights.
