Japan’s
finance minister Shoichi Nakagawa is facing calls for his resignation after he
appeared to be drunk at a news conference following meetings at this weekend’s
G7 summit in Italy.
While
Nakagawa apologized for his behavior he blamed his intoxicated appearance on
cold medication that he was taking at the time. Critics of Nakagawa weren’t
buying the excuse but according to the finance minister Prime Minister Taro Aso
has asked him to remain in his position.
Many
calling for Nakagawa’s removal have said he has damaged the national interest,
pointing to embarrassing moments in the news conference in which he slurred his
speech and had difficulty keeping his eyes open.
Nakagawa
admitted he took a sip of wine at lunch but said his drunken appearance was due
to too much cold medication that made him drowsy.
The
finance minister was in Italy for the G7 meetings that were set to discuss the world
economy and stabilizing the financial markets. Along with Japan, finance
ministers from the U.S., UK, Canada, France, Italy and Germany were in
attendance.
