Residents in Austin and Dallas, Texas reported seeing
at least one fireball in the sky Sunday. Several sonic booms were also
reported. The sightings come less than a week after two satellites collided in
space. The Federal Aviation Administration warned pilots Saturday to watch for “falling
space debris” from the satellites.
FAA spokesman Roland Herwig said the warning was “probably
from NORAD,” or the North American Aerospace Defense Command. NORAD tracks
man-made objects in space.
No ground strikes or interferences with aircraft were
reported. Residents reported seeing what appeared to be a “meteor-like” fireball
shooting across the sky and sonic booms early Sunday morning.
Last week, a Russian satellite and an American satellite
collided and produced two large debris clouds, according to NASA. The collision
produced an estimated 500 to 600 pieces of space debris.
Speculation that the fireball was debris re-entering the
earth’s atmosphere and not a meteor has not been confirmed.
