Israel Launches Fresh Air Strikes Along Gaza-Egypt Border Following Rocket Attacks

Israel has responded to recent rocket attacks by Hamas militants with fresh airstrikes along the border of Gaza and Egypt, targeting tunnels used by the militants to smuggle in weapons.

At last two rockets launched from Gaza and claimed by little known militant group Hezbollah Brigades Palestine struck southern Israel on Monday morning and while no casualties were reported Israel responded immediately.

The fresh attacks come as the two sides were said to be closer to a lasting truce following a three-week campaign that left more than 1,300 Palestinians dead and 50,000 homeless as Israel launched a comprehensive airstrike inside Gaza, targeting tunnels and Hamas buildings.

Israel has said a lasting ceasefire would only take place if the tunnels between Gaza and Egypt were closed while Hamas has demanded an end to an Israeli blockade that has left Palestinians struggling to find food and medicine.

Over the weekend Israel added a new condition to a lasting ceasefire as they demanded the release of a soldier captured in 2006.
