Phoenix Suns Fire Terry Porter, Alvin Gentry Named Interim Coach

One day after the city hosted the NBA All-Star game the Phoenix Suns fired head coach Terry Porter following a disappointing opening half to the season.

Porter inked a three-year deal to lead the Suns after Mike D’Antoni ended a four-year run to become head coach of the New York Knicks. While D’Antoni led the Suns to four straight seasons of 54 wins or more and playoff appearances all four years Porter has found the wins harder to come by and Phoenix is currently on the outside of the playoff picture with a record of 28-23.

The arrival of Porter brought in a new philosophy as the Suns tried to become a more defensive-minded club but Phoenix is allowing an average of 103.5 points per game, third most in the Western Conference.
