France Recognizes “Responsibility” for Deportation of Jews During World War II

France’s Council of State, the country’s highest court, has recognized that the state bore “responsibility” for the deportation of more than 75,000 Jews during World War II.

While the Council of State acknowledged France’s “responsibility” and role in the Holocaust they also declared that reparations for those actions had already been made.

In 1995 former French President Jacques Chirac officially recognized France’s responsibility in deporting Jews between 1942 and 1944.
