Two Nuclear Submarines Collide in Atlantic Ocean

A British Royal Navy nuclear submarine and a French Navy submarine collided in the Atlantic Ocean earlier this month. Defense ministries in Paris and London confirmed the collision Monday.

“Two ‘SNLE’ (nuclear submarines), one French and the other British, were, a few days ago, on standard patrols in the Atlantic. They briefly came in contact in a very slow speed while they were immersed. There is no casualty or injury among the crew. Neither the nuclear deterrent mission nor the nuclear security have been compromised,” the French Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

The U.K.’s Ministry of Defense also confirmed the incident saying it occurred during “routine national patrols.”

Both submarines, the HMS Vanguard and the Le Triomphant, were armed with nuclear warheads when they collided. The vessels suffered damage and were able to return to their bases.

The submarines are equipped with state-of-the-art sonar technology, but according to naval analyst Richard Cobbold, water conditions may have prevented the vessels’ detection of one another. “Modern submarines are very, very quiet. In many types of water conditions they might not hear the approach of another submarine,” Cobbold tells CNN.

Both France and Britain keep at least one nuclear-armed submarine each in the ocean at all times.
