China's Worst Drought in Nearly 50 Years Continues

AccuWeather.com reports the worst drought in nearly 50 years continues to parch the wheat and rapeseed lands of the North China Plain.

Rain fell in several areas for the first time in over 100 days last Thursday, but amounts were generally light and brought no meaningful relief from the drought.

According to Chinese government officials, recent drought relief efforts have reduced the area of affected crops by nearly a quarter in the past couple of weeks. However, still nearly 40 percent of the wheat fields in worst drought-stricken provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, Henan, Shandong, Shaanxi and Gansu remain at risk.

The weather pattern that has lead to the drought looks to change little in the next couple of weeks.

Over the next week, a series of disturbances will move along the Yangtze River, bringing a few chances for rain to southern Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei and Sichuan provinces. A disturbance can also bring spotty rain and snow to the rest of the North China Plain on Wednesday, but overall the precipitation from these features will be too light to have any significant impact on the ongoing drought.
