A suicide attack on a hospital in eastern Afghanistan over the weekend left nearly three dozen people dead and numerous others wounded. Authorities say the attacker drove a car laden with explosives into the maternity ward of a hospital in the Azra district of Logar province. At least 35 people died and 25 others were wounded. Officials say most of the victims were women and children.
Numerous agencies in Afghanistan condemned the attack. The U.S. Embassy in Kabul said the attackers “demonstrated a disregard for human life” while the U.N. Assistance Mission noted attacks targeting hospitals are “strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law.” A representative for the Afghan secretary-general called the incident “a despicable attack against civilians who were seeking medical care, as well as visiting family members and health workers.”
