While “drug rehab” may have been something relatively un-heard of back in the drug-filled days of the 1960’s, one program that started in 1966 is still in operation and expanding yearly.
“We are proud to celebrate Narconon Day this February 19,” comments Mr. Gordon Weinand, Public Relations for Narconon Drug Rehab in Georgia. “I was in one of the first classes of the Narconon Drug Rehab Program back in 1967, back in the Arizona State Prison.
“Since then, thousands of people have benefitted from the Narconon Drug Rehab Program around the world, living happy, productive, drug-free lives. Without William Benitez, who started the program, and the research of L. Ron Hubbard, we would not be here today.”
The first Narconon was founded by William Benitez, who was an inmate at Arizona State Prison. After being a heroin addict who could not seem to get off of drugs using traditional forms of drug rehab treatment and being sentenced to prison, he had a realization that drug addiction had caused most of the problems in his life, including the current one. After reading many self-betterment books, he came upon one of which was titled "Fundamentals of Thought" by Mr. L. Ron Hubbard.
Using some of the basic principles described in the book, he started practicing these and incorporating these into his life. He found himself responding favorably to his efforts and wrote the warden asking permission to start a small drug recovery program to help others. The success they had led to the creation of the Narconon Drug Rehab Program.
“It does my heart good to see the success that Narconon has had over the years,” commented Mr. Weinand. “Graduates go on to start their own businesses, go back to school, and live full lives.
“Unlike typical drug rehab programs, this drug rehab teaches that while a drug addict may have become powerless to the effects of drug addiction, this does not have to be a life sentence.
“The detoxification done through the New Life Detoxification Program, which has been reported by those undergoing it to reduce or eliminate drug cravings, helps the drug addict think clearly, and soon they can learn key life skills to enhance drug relapse prevention. It has been a God-send to thousands.”
Since this humble beginning, Narconon has expanded to hundreds of centers and dozens of countries around the world.
