Michael Phelps “Glad” for No Drug Charges

Michael Phelps says he is “glad” that he will not face drug charges over a photo showing him smoking from a marijuana pipe. Less than an hour after a South Carolina sheriff said drug charges would not be filed, the Olympic champ vowed to “dive back into the pool” and insisted he had learned a valuable lesson from the photo.

“I’m glad this matter is put to rest. But there are also some important lessons that I’ve learned. For me, it’s all about recognizing that I used bad judgment and it’s a mistake I won’t make again. For young people especially – be careful about the decisions you make. One bad decision can really hurt you and the people you care about,” Phelps said in a statement Monday.

A photo of Phelps smoking from a marijuana pipe at a University of South Carolina party surfaced late last month. Phelps apologized for acting in a “youthful and inappropriate way.” The Richland County Sheriff’s Department launched an investigation into the picture and said Phelps could face drug charges.

Earlier Monday, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said the investigation failed to produce enough evidence to prosecute Phelps and anyone present at the party.
