Teen prescription drug abuse more socially acceptable than alcohol

Social acceptance of prescription drug abuse more acceptable in teens

As experimentation with prescription drugs is less detectable than alcohol, teens are finding that the regular abuse of prescription narcotics is becoming more common.

Not only is this attitude problematic, but the ease of accessibility of such drugs is pause for great concern for parents and teachers alike. Many teens are able to gain access for experimentation without any monetary cost by raiding the medicine cabinets of family members.

“Teens tend to have the belief that, since a particular medication is gained through a prescription, it can’t be harmful,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Unfortunately, we know that this isn’t the case. Many teens aren’t afraid to experiment and, for some, that includes mixing a variety of substances in lethal combinations. Parents, teachers and other responsible community leaders must be vigilant in communicating the dangers of drug experimentation from a legal aspect as well as from a life-threatening aspect.”

Recent studies have shown that while alcohol use is down, prescription drug abuse has increased over 4% among teens. Community based school programs such as D.A.R.E. aims for widespread education of pre-teens and teens in an effort to prevent rates of abuse from growing.
