A woman is fighting for her life in a Connecticut
hospital after being attacked by a pet chimpanzee. Stamford police say Charla
Nash had just arrived at her friend’s home when the woman’s pet, Travis the
Chimp, began mauling and biting her.
Nash suffered serious injuries to her face, neck and
hands. Stamford Police Captain Rich Conklin says Nash did not provoke the
monkey.
Travis’ owner Sandra Herold had called Nash over to her
home to help get Travis, 14, back inside her house after he used a key to
escape.
When the attack began, Herold attempted to pull the estimated 200-pound animal
off of her friend. When she couldn’t get Travis to stop, she called 911 before
stabbing him and hitting him with a shovel. Travis was unaffected.
When Stamford police arrived on the scene, they shot the
chimp several times after he attacked an officer in a police car. Travis
returned to Herold’s home, where police later found him dead.
