Japanese Finance Minister Shoichi Nakagawa Resigns Following Controversial News Conference

Japan’s Finance Minister Shoichi Nakagawa has resigned following accusations that he was drunk when he attended a news conference following a session at the recent G7 meeting in Italy.

During the news conference Nakagawa was noticeably slurring his words, having difficulty keeping his eyes open and on one occasion answered a question directed at another individual. Nakagawa blamed his condition on excessive cold medication but calls for his immediate resignation quickly escalated.

Prime Minister Taro Aso initially backed Nakagawa but accepted his resignation after mounting pressure from within his government.

Aso appointed Economic Minister Kaoru Yosano as the new Finance Minister, effective immediately.
