Italy’s Opposition Leader Resigns Following Party’s Loss in Key Election

Italy’s opposition leader Walter Veltroni has announced his resignation from his Democratic Party post following the results of a key election in Sardinia in which the center-left opposition saw Renato Soru, the incumbent governor fall to the center-right candidate, Ugo Cappellacci.

A general election was held last April following the resignation of Prime Minister Romano Prodi but Veltroni lost to Silvio Berlusconi and his center-right alliance.

Despite continued economic troubles within Italy the Democratic Party has made few gains within the government and many are blaming Veltroni for poor leadership.
