Ken
Griffey Jr. is reportedly finalizing a deal that will place him with the Atlanta
Braves for the 2009 MLB season, ending speculation that the 39-year-old slugger
would return to the Seattle Mariners, his first Major League club.
Griffey
spent 11 seasons with the Mariners and picked up the American League MVP while
with Seattle in 1997, leaving many to think he may return to the city that started
his Hall of Fame career. Instead, Griffey chose to play for the city he always
expressed in interest in.
The
13-time All-Star will now return to the National League after spending a short
stint with the Chicago White Sox last year. Prior to his stop in Chicago
Griffey played with the Cincinnati Reds from 2000-2008.
Griffey
is sitting on 611 career home runs, 1,772 RBIs and is a career .288 hitter. He
is expected to platoon out in left field for the Braves where he will split
time with Matt Diaz.
